Taufkirchen - A nice surprise fluttered into the ten active gymnasts of the senior gymnastics group of TSV Taufkirchen. Exercise manager Elfriede Streinz personally sent her “dear athletes” a “sporting arrangement”: “It's a terrible time for all of us now.”

Since the group was no longer allowed to meet for sports, Streinz and co-trainer Gabi Hoijtink decided that there were "sports lessons for home now". "We have Whatsapp contact with the other groups and send them exercises for yoga, fascia or smovey so that they can continue training and not fall into a hole," she explains. As soon as the idea was born, Streinz already sat down and worked out the program in one and a half days.

Exercises for legs, shoulders, arms, hands, back and more

For training at home, she sent them seven richly illustrated pages with a wide variety of exercises for effective fall prophylaxis. These include strengthening the legs, shoulders, arms, hands and back as well as stretching them, improving the sense of balance and coordination. A separate sheet provides relaxation and breathing exercises. And in doing so, she not only surprised the ten women aged 65 to 86, but actually delighted them.

"She has done so much work," says Erna Lang, who has already exchanged ideas with her fellow Turner on the phone. The 83-year-old does not normally miss a sport lesson. She has been doing gymnastics at TSV for over 30 years, most recently with Heidi Bachmaier, who gave up at the age of 84 as a trainer with a heavy heart for health reasons.

Ten minutes every day

The new trainer duo Streinz and Hoijtink also knows how to motivate the members with new exercises. "Please do ten minutes every day and move, stretch and strengthen yourself until we meet again", the trainer asks the seniors in her letter. "If you don't have a ball to roll off the fascia, every round object you have at home goes," she explains, adding apple, orange or rolling pin as examples. Small circular movements across the skin and muscles would be ideal. "If you don't have a Rodendoball, take a pillow." It is important to be able to move it up and down with it.

A missing Theraband is also no excuse for the daily training program. The trainer from Hohenpolding sewed one herself and put it in the mail. And if necessary, every gymnast will definitely have tights at home that are elastic and suitable for pulling exercises. Missing weights could be replaced by small, half-full water bottles and serve as ideal dumbbells for fitness training at home, so another tip. In addition, she added five balloons, which the women should inflate five times a day, as "important training for the lungs", which is particularly important in Corona times. Because the virus "loves weak lungs," Streinz explains. And "if you don't have a balloon, then inflate bags until they burst!"

A pyramid scheme emerged from the exercises

Lang is deeply touched that there are so dear people, especially in times of crisis, who think of the elderly, who are now tied to their apartment: "That made me foolish."

The rest of the TSV trainer team also actively participates in training at home. For example Gerti Bart, who provides her various groups with dance videos, or Gisela Glied, who also sent the Streinz program to her gymnastics ladies. "It has already become a pyramid scheme," says Streinz. "Many thank us and are happy that we are with them."
