Graefelfing - Alexander Schmidt doesn't have time to think long. If the TSV Graefelfing footballer wants to book the last free seat in the “MA Club Championship”, he must not lose a second.

"It had to be quick," says Schmidt after the moment when he, his brother Simon and Kadir Sönmezcicek - both players with the wolves - registered for the eSports tournament. Her coach on the lawn, Bernd Gegenfurtner, cannot say anything about the class of his trio: "I have no idea how good they are." The coach of the district league knows very well about the footballing qualities of his players, but not about them the console.

30 clubs determine the FIFA champion on PS4

This is what this weekend is about for the “MA Club Championship”, the open Erdinger district championship, which the Erdinger Anzeiger, as a local edition of Munich's Merkur, is organizing together with the event company MA Gold Cup: 30 clubs from Upper Bavaria - mainly from the district of Erding - are being identified on Playstation 4 their master in the video game FIFA 20.

The euphoria at Gegenfurtner is limited. "I don't know what to do with it," he says. His players see it a little differently. Alexander Schmidt has been playing soccer virtually since he was six years old. At that time the game was still called FIFA 98. "I'm not a professional," says the 27-year-old.

Which does not mean that he and his two colleagues - as TSV Graefelfing the only representative from the Würmtal - have no chance at the tournament. "We are not competing to be the last to sail," emphasizes Schmidt.

The mode of the "MA Club Championship" 2020

The organizers divided the 30 teams into two groups of 15 teams. Each team has 14 games. After the single round, the clubs in places two to seven qualify for the round of 16, while the two group winners move directly into the round of the best eight. Each group then determines its finalist, who will move into the final for the tournament win. In addition to a trophy, the winner can also look forward to plenty of drinks for the club evening.

"The main thing is that you can't dismount," Gegenfurtner says with a smile. The TSV trio can not only show off without fear of existence. Because gambling in the living room, unlike on the lawn, Alexander Schmidt, who recently returned from his rehab after cruciate ligament surgery, is allowed to play.

TSV Graefelfing meets TSV Gilching in the derby

He announced fit for the start on the couch on Sunday against TSV Gilching-Argelsried. The clubs have until April 8 to complete the first match day. The duelers each play three individual games, which are rewarded with three points for a win and a counter for a tie.

"It's like playing alone," Schmidt describes the relatively anonymous procedure via the Internet. However, there is no guarantee that the opponent will be the same as the one reported. “In theory, God and the world can play a part in this,” says Schmidt. You only need the personal ID of the person reported.

Schmidt would like to see an eSports round at the association level

He would have liked to have the organizers allowed more players per team. In this way, the wolves could have had a lot of experience for a project that is actually overdue for Schmidt. "It would be a cool thing to have your own eSports round," he says, and encourages virtual game operations at the association level. Even at the risk of his team being relegated.
