Würmtal - The German Football Association has created the basis for the amateur leagues to be able to end their seasons in spite of the Corona crisis - if the relevant national association so wishes. For the first time in history, the football season from the 3rd league to the lowest classes can be extended beyond June 30th.
If no end of the season is wanted, "the 2020/21 game year can begin at a later date or, if necessary, even be canceled in whole or in part," said DFB Vice President Rainer Koch, who is also President of the Bavarian Football Association (BFV).
Football season can still be canceled
However, this does not mean that the currently interrupted 2019/20 season will definitely continue. However, an early termination is extremely difficult for the associations, since no regulation can be found in the DFB statutes for this case. Therefore, the football associations are threatened with a wave of lawsuits - for example from sponsors who demand their money back. Koch continues to see an early termination of the season as the “very last option”.
