Nyon (dpa) - According to a media report, the European football union UEFA has given the national leagues a period of almost four weeks to decide whether to continue the season.

"National associations and / or leagues should be able to notify UEFA by May 25 of the scheduled restart of their national competitions," quoted The Times newspaper in a UEFA document. Accordingly, the date of the planned restart and the format of the competition should be mentioned.

UEFA recently recommended its 55 member associations in the coronavirus pandemic to end the currently suspended season. The background is also the qualification for the European Cup 2020/21, which should take place as sporty as possible. However, the UEFA executive committee also relaxed the entry requirements for the upcoming season the previous week.

If an interruption of the current season is inevitable (for example due to a decision by the state government), the associations should first determine the European Cup participants - according to sporting and fair criteria. These must then be confirmed by UEFA.

The "Sport Bild" reports on the two possible variants. Either the teams best placed in the event of abandonment take part in the European Cups. From the Bundesliga that would be Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Champions League and Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04 in the Europa League. Or the teams qualified for the current season can be there again, that would be FC Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig as well as Leverkusen and in the Europa League Wolfsburg and Gladbach for the premier class.

There are therefore two variants for the case that no DFB Cup winner is determined as a participant in the Europa League. Eintracht Frankfurt should either participate as the semi-finalist with the highest UEFA coefficient behind the already qualified teams from Munich and Leverkusen or the Bundesliga seventh from Wolfsburg would move up. There is still no official confirmation of these variants from the DFL, DFB or UEFA.
