Emmering - A good year ago, Josef "Beb" Michl hung the pipe on the famous nail after 42 years as an active referee. On May 1st, the district “referee legend” is now celebrating its 70th birthday.

The referee, who lives in Emmering, would have loved to give one to his friends at the regular table at the old inn in Emmering. "We'll make up for it when life goes back to normal," promises the avowed 60er supporter with regard to the currently rampant corona pandemic.

He never counted his bets

For two years, from 1987 to '89, the Emmeringer led games in what was then the highest amateur class, the Bayernliga. He never counted his bets, but it was well over 2,000, says Michl. Before his career as a referee, he was a successful football player with the then national league club FC Emmering. Michl was one of the most successful referees in the regional referee group FFB / Ammersee. Because of his authority and competence Michl was a welcome game manager on the courses in the district. Once you've played yourself, situations can be better assessed, explains Michl of his success. Many of his referee colleagues lack this experience. DIETER METZLER
