Dallas (dpa) - Legend Dirk Nowitzki has not given up his sporting ambition in retirement. The 41-year-old sees his future in basketball, among other things - although probably not as a coach.

"There are many opportunities, I am looking forward to what lies ahead, and I will certainly need a new challenge, because the hunger for competition is simply too great for that to be all," said Nowitzki in an interview with the Germans Press agency. "I can imagine working with players, but I would also like to support them in Germany."

Just over a year ago, the native of Würzburg ended his glorious career for the Dallas Mavericks in the North American professional basketball league NBA. He had led the team from Texas to the title in 2011. He plans to stay in Dallas with his wife Jessica and their three children. "The Mavericks are of course an option," he said of his future.

His former teammate Maxi Kleber said recently that Nowitzki would be "the perfect coach" from his point of view. "I haven't committed myself yet, but I've always said in the past that I don't see myself on the coaching bench," he said. "Nothing really changed about that. Basketball sport made a lot of things possible for me. I saw the world and experienced things that I would not have done without the sport. I gained a lot of experience in the process. Of course I want to do that in the future to give something back."
