Düsseldorf (dpa) - The Düsseldorfer EG and the Bergische HC urgently demand political perspectives for the team sport leagues in Germany.
"Politics are currently not providing any concepts. Any ideas for securing a livelihood and for a fresh start come from sport or from the operators of the event venues," said the managing director of the Düsseldorf EG, Stefan Adam, the German press agency. "At the moment it is only about prohibitions and not about what is possible."
If the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) and the Handball Bundesliga are not soon shown concrete options for the planned start of the season in September, the livelihoods of the clubs and leagues would be at stake. Both leagues had canceled their season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"We are extremely dependent on being able to play again in September. We are therefore very interested that it will work in football," said Jörg Föste, managing director of the handball Bundesliga club Bergischer HC. In football, the interrupted seasons should end this weekend without spectators.
Should the football concept fail, the survival of all professional team sports in Germany would be in question. "Without this path and long-term planning uncertainty, professional sport in Germany is at existential risk - including football in its previous form," said Adam.
