The economic crisis has also reached Israeli Olympic athletes, and "Israel Today" has learned that the scholarships for those who have already secured their participation in the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games will be frozen in the first phase, and others will be cut. The scholarship cut is set to start in about a month and a half, in early July.

The main casualties of the cut will be the Israeli baseball team players, who are considered senior Olympic medalists next summer. The Olympic Committee explained the matter by having the team number more than twenty players, so the biggest expense is on scholarships for the largest team on the delegation. Therefore, the scholarships for baseball players will be completely discontinued on July 1.

Another reason that made baseball's choice easier for the Olympic Committee was due to the fact that the team's major budget also comes from sponsors and donations, given its great success in Jewish communities across the United States.

Where's the sponsorship money?

In the small industries, the next cut is to be feared, too, as, as we published here in the section last month, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Culture and Sports intend to cut down on all local and Olympic sports. This is because there is a chance that the Olympic Games will not be held next year too and then money will be thrown for free on another Olympic cycle that will not participate in the Olympics.

"We understand the need to cut back," said a chairman of one of the Olympic branches in Israel last night. For athletes. Is that where the sponsorship money goes? "

Remember, at the beginning of the month, the Israeli Olympic Committee announced that its budget had been reduced by at least NIS 8 million (from NIS 25 million in total), but no one thought it would hurt the athletes themselves. Olympic athletes fear that both their personal sponsors and the committee itself will soon be abandoned due to the lack of clarity about returning to international competitions.

Israeli Olympic Committee Chairman Yigal Carmi has convened a meeting of all union leaders for the beginning of next month to prepare for next year as well at the Israeli angle and expected cuts to athletes, as well as to raise other burning issues in the face of the Corona crisis.
