At Florian Krauss, one disappointment chases the next: Corona presumably misses the European Championship and the World Cup. The talent of the Seeshaupt yacht club is hoping for a start at the end of the year.

Seeshaupt - It was only a quarter of a year ago that Circolo Vela Torbole advertised its sailing party during the "Lupo Cup". But not only the regatta on Lake Garda has since been canceled. In view of the corona pandemic, the entire annual plan has been mixed up in the 420s youth class. The European Championship in Golfo di Gaeta, north of Naples in the Province of Lazio, and the World Championship in Crozon Morgat in the far northwest of Brittany have been canceled. In both cases it was the only viable alternative for the organizers.

Sailing: For Krauss there is still hope for a start at the Youth Sailing World Championships in Brazil

Although the organizers are thinking about making up for the dates at the end of the year, the cancellation of the two season highlights is a big blow for Florian Krauß. "This throws everything overboard," says the helmsman from the Yacht Club Seeshaupt (YCSS) disappointed. This year should have been the summer of Krauss and his forerunner Jannis Sümmchen (Chiemsee Yacht Club). At the World Cup, the crew had calculated a place in the top ten, at the EM, they wanted to stay in the top five. The team now only has hope for the Youth Sailing World Championships in Salvador (Brazil) in mid-December. The goal of the Seeshaupt is ambitious: "We want to get a medal there," announces Krauss. But at the moment it is not certain whether a qualification, let alone the regatta, will take place given the situation in the largest country in South America, where almost 100,000 people were infected with Covid 19 in early May.

Sailing: Florian Krauß and Voroter Jannis Sümmchen have developed into a top team in the 420

That would be bitter for the two sailors. Krauss and Sümmchen developed into a top team within a very short space of time, although they have only been sailing together since the end of August 2018. But the talent of the two 17-year-olds is immense. They have had practice with this type of boat for a long time. Krauss had previously been traveling with Jakob Lanzinger, Sümmchen with Krauss' brother Nicolas. Somehow, the two who knew each other from the joint training group had searched and found each other. The duo has common hobbies such as skiing or soccer. Above all, it shares its admiration for FC Bayern Munich. "Because we spend so much time together, we know how the other person thinks," Krauss says of a great intimacy with one another.

Sailing: Krauß and Sümmchen maintain a friendly atmosphere in the boat

This is noticeable in the boat in that the two deal with each other in a collegial manner and in a friendly manner. Although Krauß ultimately bears responsibility as a helmsman, Sümmchen has a lot to do with decisions. "He gives a lot of good information", the skipper appreciates the cooperation with his forerunner. Since the team had hired an excellent trainer with Daniel Zepuntke almost two years ago, they quickly made extraordinary progress. Last year the crew finished sixth at the U17 World Championship in Vilamoura. It would have been even more possible, but a material breakage meant that the two Upper Bavarians still had to say goodbye to third place. "It is annoying to miss a medal by doing something like this," Krauss regrets. The two were compensated a little by winning the title at the Bavarian Youth Championships and gold at the International German Youth Championship in the U17.

Sailing: Florian Krauß and Jannis Sümmchen spend more than a hundred days on the water

These successes don't just fall into the team's lap. The two boys spend over a hundred days a year on the water. The costs are essentially shared between the parents. The Seeshaupt Yacht Club and the Chiemsee Yacht Club also provide great support. The advice of Seeshaupt's youth leader Walter von Schorlemer is of immense value. The Maria-Theresia-Gymnasium in Munich, where Krauß is in eleventh grade, willingly supports the helmsman. "When I have competitions, they are very cooperative and give me the corresponding exemptions," Krauss thanks for the support from his school.

Sailing: First Krauss wants to graduate from high school, then he wants to attack properly in his sport

In the past few weeks, however, the skipper has not been able to submit any requests to his directorate. Neither lessons nor sailing are currently possible due to the corona crisis. Krauß therefore switched to home office and, in addition to math and English, also teaches plenty of tactics and theory for his sport. Because at some point the restrictions for the sailors will probably be relaxed again. And then the crew has big plans. "First of all, get the Abi and then go full throttle" is Krauss motto for the future. At some point a sailing party has to go up again. On Lake Garda or anywhere else.
