Thanks to the first Bundesliga success since January, Werder Bremen keeps the hope of relegation alive. The guests don't play like a relegation candidate for long stretches - but shortly before the final whistle they have to survive a moment of trembling.

Freiburg (dpa) - The cries of relief at Werder Bremen echoed from the almost empty tiers of the Black Forest Stadium. Coach Florian Kohfeldt and his players roared their joy at the hugely important 1-0 (1-0) victory at SC Freiburg in the cool spring air of Breisgau.

But a few seconds after the final whistle, Kohfeldt hurried into the cabin. "For self-protection, because of course I would have liked to hug one or the other, but that is not possible in these times," said the 37-year-old, referring to the Corona crisis. "That's why I went in, sat in my chair and was happy."

Thanks to the first Bundesliga victory since January, Bremen, who are at risk of relegation, at least for the time being reduced the gap between Fortuna Düsseldorf and relegation rank to two points. The Fortuna will only compete in the derby at 1. FC Köln on Sunday (6:00 p.m. / Sky). Leonardo Bittencourt had placed in the 19th minute with a placed low shot for the hard-fought and ultimately happy Bremen victory. "It was a first step, nothing more, but it was a first step. The relief when the referee whistles is great," said Kohfeldt.

In the final phase, the guests survived a moment of trembling. In the 89th minute, Manuel Gulde achieved the supposed equalization for Werders Philipp Bargfrede immediately after yellow-red. Since SC striker Nils Petersen had previously been on the offside, referee Robert Hartmann did not give the goal after consulting the video assistant. "We lost totally undeserved today, I think. But we are not good enough in the final situations outside the standards. We have to be criticized," said SC coach Christian Streich.

Werder's loudest man wasn't even on the field. Instead, Kohfeldt gave everything on the sidelines. He was constantly on the move, and thanks to the ghost backdrop, almost every one of his commands could be heard: "Change of rhythm!", "Switch to a chain of three!", "Continue, further!" - Kohfeldt hardly left any action uncommented.

His team also showed a similar commitment. Werder did not appear like a relegation candidate, but put the hosts under pressure from the center line at the latest. The SC came through Roland Sallai (17th), who shot past Petersen after a nice break, to the first big chance. But two minutes later, Werder struck. After a fine pass from Davy Klaassen into the interface, Bittencourt finished with a nice long shot into the far corner.

Kohfeldt did not rest afterwards. Compared to the emotional Bremen coach, his Freiburg colleague Christian Streich held back surprisingly. The otherwise very busy and open-minded prank rarely messed with the referees and made rather calm announcements.

For this, his team put enormous pressure on the increasingly passive Bremen at the latest in the final phase. Freiburg ran tirelessly - and was even compensated by guilders. The defender dusted off after a Petersen post shot, Werder was shocked. But because of Petersen's offside, referee Hartmann took the goal back after video evidence.
