FIFA President Gianni Infantino is constantly flying around the world. That brings with it his job. He himself promised to keep the costs as low as possible. According to a report, in 2017 there was a change on a return flight from South America. FIFA disagrees.

Zurich (dpa) - FIFA chief Gianni Infantino is faced with new allegations about a charter flight with a private jet.

However, the world football association rejects any wrongdoing by its president. "The FIFA President visited Suriname in April 2017 as part of a trip to the CONCACAF region," the weekend said on request. The return flight complied with "the rules and regulations of FIFA".

Previously, the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" reported that Infantino had used a private plane at short notice to travel back from South America to Switzerland. Compared to Tomaz Vesel, the head of compliance at the world association, who asked for an explanation, he justified the resulting higher costs in the six-figure range with urgent appointments the following day. The actually booked scheduled flight had been delayed according to the "SZ" report.

Among other things, Infantino had agreed to meet UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin on the day of his return from Suriname. According to the "SZ" report, there was never an appointment because the head of the continental association was in Armenia that day.

Infantino had already been criticized for his flying habits at the beginning of his term in 2016. So he had made the trip to visit the Pope in a private plane and also used the plane of a Russian oligarch. There were no consequences for Infantino from the FIFA supervisory authorities. FIFA did not announce whether the new case would be investigated.

Infantino had made his first flight as FIFA chief to a meeting of the International Football Association Board in Wales with a low-cost airline, thereby fueling hopes for a change of heart in FIFA, which was then shaken by corruption scandals. "The total cost of such private flights fell significantly with the new FIFA leadership in 2016," the international association said.
