Mainz (dpa) - RB Leipzig is again the first pursuer of the top duo from Munich and Dortmund. With a 5: 0 (3: 0), the autumn champions made another debacle for FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday and ended a series of three games without a win.
The Rheinhessen had already lost 0: 8 in the first leg. With a three-pack from striker Timo Werner (11th / 48th / 75th minute) and goals from Yussuf Poulsen (23rd) and Marcel Sabitzer (36th), the Leipzig team climbed behind FC Bayern and BVB in the table of football Bundesliga in third place and have clearly set course for the Champions League again.
Leipzig's head coach Julian Nagelsmann chose a 4-4-2 system to develop more pressure after the small earnings crisis, which quickly paid off. In the 11th minute, Werner scored the lead from close range for the guests and his first goal after 310 goalless minutes.
With the goal conceded, the initial urge to the opposing half of the despondent and lacking in Mainz was almost over until the break. The Saxons kept up the pressure and were able to increase to 2: 0 with a header from Poulsen, who played his 250th competitive game for Leipzig, after a soulful flank from Sabitzer. The duo also scored the third goal: This time Sabitzer used a template from Poulsen with a shot in the right corner.
After the 0: 3 the Mainz had to fear, as in the first leg, to get angry under the wheels again. Because not much was missing and they would have gone with a 0: 5 in the half, since Poulsen (33.) and Christopher Nkundu (45.) still gave two hundred percent chances. Not only the goals scored documented that the hosts had a bad day. Until half-time, the statistics showed 11: 0 shots on goal and 71:29 percent possession of the ball for Leipzig.
It did not take long after the restart before Werner met again and increased after excellent preliminary work by Kevin Kampl. He even crowned his performance with 5-0 in the 75th minute. It came as no surprise that the striker dropped his load inhibition against Mainz and scored goals 22, 23 and 24: it was already his 13 goal in the eighth game against the Rheinhessen. He also increased Leipzig's goal rate this season to 68 goals. This is a new club record. Last season they scored 63 goals in full season.
The Rheinhessen, previously in three games without defeat, should have a hard time with such a poor performance in the fight against relegation. Robin Quaison fired the first shot at the Leipzig goal in the 54th minute. The striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who came on as a substitute in the second half, could not change the disastrous quota.
