Berlin (dpa) - Formula 1 does not want to be braked when a new driver starts their season, even in the event of a corona infection.
"We will design processes in such a way that the diagnosis of an infection does not lead to a cancellation. If a driver has an infection, reserve drivers are available," said Managing Director Chase Carey in a contribution on the Formula 1 website. July begins their season with a Grand Prix in Spielberg, Austria.
The originally planned start in Australia in mid-March was canceled due to the Covid 19 illness of a member of the McLaren team. Since then, Formula 1 has been on the compulsory break. Meanwhile, the motorsport premier class is very confident that "it has the processes and expertise and the skills to provide a safe environment and to do all the things that come our way," said Carey.
An infected team member must go into quarantine in a hotel and be replaced by someone else. Even in the event that a racing team could not take part in a world championship run, this would not automatically lead to the race being canceled, the Formula 1 boss assured.
