Landkreis - The Bavarian Football Association (BFV) has caused a lot of attention in the past few weeks with its approach to the corona pandemic. In contrast to almost all other regional associations, the Bavarian football season is to be played to the end - if necessary only in the coming year. The following season has therefore already been canceled. This would stretch the current season to almost two years. Lots of time for little games. To counteract idle, the BFV wants to play a so-called League Cup. So that this is also relevant for sport, the association has come up with something special.

Janker: Three direct promotion places offer a high sporting incentive

So the three most successful teams should be able to compete in the Bayernliga. The so-called solution working group (LAG) recommends a league cup competition with preliminary, intermediate and final rounds for each of the five regional league seasons. The design is flexible depending on the pandemic course. The games are to be played during the non-play times of league play. At the end, the respective winners play out a total of three direct promotion places to the Bayern League in a relegation round. In addition, a dovetailing with the season 2021/2022 in the Toto Cup competition at association level is planned.

The additional competition has no influence on the results of the regular season. Should a team win the League Cup that has already made it through the league to promotion to the Bayern League, a successor principle applies. If a team that would be relegated via the league emerges as the winner of the league cup competition, it does not advance to the Bayern league, but holds the class as a reward.

“I think that the model presented is very appealing for all clubs. In the preliminary round, many games with a derby character are guaranteed by regional groups. The three direct promotion places also offer a high sporting incentive, ”explains association game director Josef Janker. In the next step, the further content and schedule of the League Cup competition is pending. For this purpose, a further working group is created, in which all interested Landesliga club representatives can participate.

Schaefer: Petition already supported by 196 clubs

Meanwhile, numerous footballers are still trying to resist the continuation of the season. In an online petition (to be found on www.openpetition.de), they campaign for the termination of the 2019/2020 season. The petition had reached the target of collecting 7,500 votes after a short time - long before the two-week deadline that applies to the petitions posted on the website.

Initiator Dirk Schaefer, head of the soccer department at FC Stein (Middle Franconia), shows how huge the response is: “With the signature, we can understand 196 clubs whose support has been confirmed by officials such as department heads, sports managers, board members or similar functions. Another 123 clubs were named by, players, coaches or other club members. "
