Saul Neges equalized for Atletico with a penalty kick before Barcelona regained the lead a little after a break and Messi quietly executed in the middle of the goal to score his 700 goal with his club and his country.
But Saul scored again from a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, for each team to get one point.
Barcelona remained in second place with 70 points and one point behind Real Madrid, the leaders who can widen the difference to four points before five rounds from the end if they beat their guest Getafe next Thursday.
