Juve: 5 milestones of its season in the league

2020-07-26T11:01:12.700Z

Juventus Turin is one victory away against Sampdoria this Sunday from a 36th league title, the ninth in a row. Back in five key dates on a lively season for Juve, who seemed much less domineering than in the last few times.

June 16, 2019: Appointment of Maurizio Sarri as coach

After the announcement of their separation by mutual agreement with Massimiliano Allegri on May 17, Juve are looking for a new coach. The biggest names are mentioned: we are talking about Pep Guardiola, Mauricio Pocchetino, who then came out of a C1 final with Tottenham, or even a return of Antonio Conte, before he finally signed to the Inter, but it will not be. Instead, the tifosis see the arrival of Maurizio Sarri, the former Napoli coach, who is leaving Chelsea after just one season. At first glance, the Juve-Sarri association is not really obvious. Stamped southern football in a country where North-South rivalry is very present in football and even in society, Sarri had several times had rather harsh words towards Juventus and his supporters when he coached Naples. Result: the Neapolitan fans feel betrayed, and some of those of Juve find it very difficult to forgive their new coach ... His obsession with the game, despite sometimes the results, also worries within a club that does not swear by the titles, and some are starting to wonder if we might not be facing a huge casting error. More than a year later, Sarri has not necessarily reassured his world: Juve is certainly champion, but the defeats in the Italian Cup (in the final against Naples) and in the Supercup (against Lazio) have weakened the coach and the European campaign in August looks like a real test he will have to pass to keep his place.

August 31, 2019: Victory over Naples (4-3), first goal of the season for Ronaldo

Silent in the first league match in Parma (1-0 victory), Cristiano Ronaldo repaired this by scoring his first goal of the season on the hour mark against Napoli. A goal that will call for many others: with 30 goals, Ronaldo is the top scorer in the league with Juve, far ahead of Paul Dybala (11 goals). Sparkling this season, the Portuguese can still win the title of top scorer in the championship, as he is tied with Ciro Immobile (Lazio) at the top of the standings. This match also takes the form of a rematch of Maurizio Sarri on his former team after the avalanche of criticism that followed his appointment, as well as Juve on his runner-up from last season.

December 7, 2019: defeat to Lazio (1-3)

After 14 days without defeat, Juve got their feet wet against Lazio Rome (1-3). This failure completely revives the championship, since it allows the Laziales to come back three lengths from Juve and five from Inter. We begin to believe in a real three-way fight for the Scudetto to the end. Especially since two and a half months later, on February 29, 2020, Lazio took advantage of the fact that the Bianconeris had a game late to play against Inter to take the place of leader and put even more pressure on his two adversaries. But the cut due to the coronavirus will end up being fatal for Simone Inzaghi's team.

February 8, 2020: defeat in Verona (1-2) and controversy around Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano may score a fantastic goal, Juve loses a second time in three games after the defeat against Napoli (1-2). A finding that is annoying. And according to  Marca , the Portuguese would have had enough and would taste very little the defensive fragility of his team ... Ronaldo, still as ambitious, would expect a real change of dynamics within the club. While at this time of the year, Juve had very often already almost confirmed their title of champion, this defeat allows Inter to come back to the height of the Turinese. It does not take more for the Italian press to talk about the crisis and the defeat in Lyon two weeks later in the first leg of the Champions League (0-1) will not help.

July 20, 2020: Juve take revenge on Lazio and virtually secure the title

By beating Lazio (2-1) during the 34th day, Juve made a double blow: it first takes its revenge on the team which will have given it a hard time a good part of the season and which the had beaten in the first leg, and at the same time she took one step closer to her thirty-sixth title as Italian champion. With eight points ahead of Inter with four days remaining, here it is heading towards the Scudetto after getting rid of its two competitors after the resumption of the championship. Juve will not necessarily have managed well the last eight days (5 wins, 2 draws and one defeat), but they will have had the merit of doing it better than their competitors, who have cracked the image of Inter held in check last Wednesday.
