Maccabi Tel Aviv is scheduled to start its journey next week in the Champions League qualifiers after being drawn today (Sunday) in the first round against the Latvian champions FC Riga. The draw determined that the Israeli champion would be the host, but due to the corona's limitations and the fact that Israel is still defined as a "red state", the date and final location of the individual game have not yet been determined.

In order to reach the home stage of the prestigious factory on the continent, the Yellows will have to go through a total of four stages and five games, with, as mentioned, the Latvians being the first hurdle.

Riga FC is the aforementioned Latvian champion, ranked first in the country after 13 rounds in the 2020/21 season. Like Maccabi Tel Aviv, the Latvians also won two consecutive championships when, as at the beginning of last summer, they also lead the table with a difference of 5 points over the team in second place, with a balance of 12 wins and a single loss.

The team's coach is Russian Oleg Kononov, who was appointed to the post last February. Before arriving in Riga, Kononov managed to coach in Ukraine and Russia when his last job was at the Russian luxury club Spartak Moscow. The supplier is handsome by all accounts.

The Latvian top scorer is the Congolese Cola Ambombo, who has scored 7 goals in 13 league games, while his Ukrainian teammate Roman Debelko has scored four goals. And if that's not enough, Riga's squad has a respectable amount of 16 foreign players in total, who appear alongside local players.
