Atlético announced this Monday that it has not detected more positive cases for coronavirus in the new round of PCR tests that it has carried out on the first team and members of the coaching staff and has confirmed that those affected are two footballers, the Argentine Ángel Correa and the Croatian Sime Vrsaljko, who was recovering from an injury. This Sunday, the rojiblanco club activated the corresponding protocol of action, completing the first team and all the members of the expedition to Lisbon a new round of PCR tests. In the club there was fear of a possible massive contagion, since the two affected had had contact with the rest of the expedition, something that for the moment has been ruled out after the new results.

The detection of positives has drastically disrupted Atlético's plans in their preparation for Thursday's game against Leipzig. The rojiblancos had planned to train this Monday morning in Majadahonda and, in the afternoon, catch a plane that would take them to Lisbon - at 8:00 p.m. the departure of the flight to the Portuguese capital was scheduled - with an expedition made up of 93 people . However, no player has approached the sports city and they have remained isolated in their private homes awaiting the results of the new round of testing, which began on Sunday afternoon and ended on Monday morning. This afternoon they will return to training and tomorrow they will travel to Lisbon without the two affected footballers, who as specified by the club are asymptomatic and under the supervision of the club's doctors.

UEFA's protocol specifies that a team may compete as long as it presents 13 players from the A list registered in the competition and one is a goalkeeper, conditions that Atlético would fulfill at this time. In the case of the rojiblanco club, this list consists of 24 players: the 23 members of the first team plus the left-back of the subsidiary Manu Sánchez, according to official UEFA data. Atlético has also announced that, along with the 21 available players from the first team and Manu Sánchez, the players of the subsidiary Alex Dos Santos, Riquelme and Toni Moya will also travel to the Portuguese capital this Tuesday to concentrate on the dispute of the quarterfinals of the Champions.

A trip for which Correa and Vrsaljko have been ruled out, since, according to the protocol, they could not travel to play even if they gave the three negative results that are required to be able to rejoin the activity. “It is currently recognized that those who have recovered from COVID-19 may still be at risk of having positive PCR test results, despite not having a risk of infection or symptoms of the virus. Participants in Group 1 (players) or Group 2 (referees) who have verified the confirmation that they have recovered from the virus are invited to present such documentation to the experts that make up the UEFA protocol panel, at least one week before the next game ”, specifies the protocol.
