Col de Porte (dpa) - The German tour hope Emanuel Buchmann stormed third place on the Dauphiné tour with a strong performance.
The Ravensburger had to admit defeat only the currently outstanding Slovenian Primoz Roglic and the second placed French cyclist Thibaut Pinot at the mountain finish on the Col de Porte with eight seconds behind. Vuelta winner Roglic also took over the yellow jersey of the overall winner from his Belgian team-mate Wout van Aert by winning the second stage over 135 kilometers. Pinot and Buchmann follow, twelve and 14 seconds behind.
"I felt good and attacked. I was one of the strongest riders in the peloton. I'll try again. This is a good test for the Tour de France," said Buchmann, adding: "Everyone is on a good level. Roglic is very strong. He seems to be the favorite. "
Buchmann launched an attack shortly before the end of the 17.5-kilometer final climb with an average of 6.2 percent, but no one could keep up with Roglic's counterattack. Not even tour winner Egan Bernal from Colombia, who finished tenth ten seconds back and is fourth in the overall standings (+0: 16).
His prominent British teammates Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome had already said goodbye. The four-time Tour Champion Froome had to tear down 4.4 kilometers from the finish, but showed rising form compared to the last appearances. Thomas was in the top group up to less than three kilometers from the finish.
