New York (AP) - Defending champion Bianca Andreescu from Canada will not start at the US Open for tennis professionals, which begins on August 31.
The coronavirus pandemic prevented them from properly preparing for the competition, the 20-year-old stated as the reason. Previously, the 2019 men's champion, Rafael Nadal, did not start at the US Open.
Andreescu is the fourth woman in the top seven of the world rankings to refrain from participating in the US Open. Ashley Barty (Australia), Elina Switolina (Ukaine) and Kiki Bertens (Netherlands) had previously canceled their start.
