In a new series, the “Schongauer Nachrichten” is helping to gain an overview of the wide range of sports on offer in our region. Today: Rock´n´Roll.

Peiting - she was so impressed, Stefanie Wenzel remembers it very well. Secured with a harness and ropes, the woman swung through the air in the gym. "She made fun of her partner and made a Superman," says Wenzel. And as a six-year-old she stood there in amazement. Then she knew: I want to be able to do that too, I want to dance rock'n'roll. Her enthusiasm remained. Almost 30 years and many tournaments later, Wenzel trained the pairs at RRC Peiting together with others.

“I slipped into it so much,” she says about her job as a trainer. First the 35-year-old helped with the children's training, then she got her coaching license ten years ago. Before that, she had danced tournaments herself from 1997 to 2006. “At some point I didn't want to do that anymore,” she says. Instead, it is now helping others to achieve success.

Ten trainers are at the RRC Peiting

There are currently eleven couples in the youth and adult sector in Peiting, and there are two girls and one boy in the club who take turns dancing - because rock'n'roll is only possible with two people. A few won the runner-up in the German championship last year. Wenzel also had to search a little before she found the right partner. At first it was a friend from kindergarten - he persuaded the girl to come along. And while she was impressed by "Superman", he jumped off again. “I had three or four dance partners before the right one came.” In 1996 the time had come, after a year of training, Wenzel and her partner competed. They were two times Upper Bavarian champions, once third in the Bavarian championship. “My dancers are more successful,” says Wenzel with a smile.

In total there are around ten trainers at the RRC, including some former tournament dancers. Many have been with us for years, some for decades, including Wenzel's former coach. “We are grateful to them. If someone has been there for that long, it shows that the club is doing something right, ”says the 35-year-old. The couples have no permanent trainers, everyone helps each athlete if necessary. "Because everyone has their strengths" - one in choreography, the other in acrobatics or gymnastics.

We also dance to current hits. We can also use a lot of what is in the charts

Because “Rock'n'Roll dance is varied - and also demanding. The women are whirling around in the air. To become "Superman" you need a lot of training and body awareness. If you aim high, “for you it's a competitive sport,” says Wenzel.

But dance also has its charm for everyone else - provided you love music and movement. The name "Rock'n'Roll" leads many on the wrong track. Because as with the movements, the sport is also varied with the music, not only old classics can be heard. “We also dance to current hits. We can also use a lot of what is in the charts. "

The variety, the gymnastics elements, the speed and the fact that it doesn't take much for the sport - “just dance shoes and an outfit” - speak for rock'n'roll, according to Wenzel. She also gave other sports opportunities: “I've tried all that are available in Peiting.” And there are quite a few. Only one sport has conquered your heart: rock'n'roll. And that from an early age.
