Cologne (dpa) - Barcelona crashed in the Champions League failed at Bayern, Real Madrid already out in the round of 16 and Atlético no longer there: The Spanish hopes in the European Cup this season rest solely on the Europa League experts of FC Seville.
"The pride of Spain" was the headline of the sports newspaper "Marca" after the Andalusians' 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the semi-finals. For the sixth time, Seville is in the final of the second highest European club competition. The results are impressive: the club has won all five finals to date, making it the overall record winner of the Europa League and UEFA Cup.
Against United, the team of the former national coach Julen Lopetegui again demonstrated its impressive efficiency and rip-off. The first clear chance in the second round was enough for Joker Luuk de Jong to score the winner in the 78th minute. However, the former Borussia Mönchengladbach striker was not the only match winner: Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made United's attackers desperate and repeatedly saved his team from falling behind. "We were able to show that we are a great team with a big heart," said the 29-year-old. The next opportunity to do that is on Friday at the finals in Cologne.
