Without German participation, there would have been no game on free TV. But with FC Bayern in the final, ZDF is allowed to broadcast the game against Paris Saint-Germain. There are already plans for the coming years.

The final of the Champions League at the final tournament in Lisbon will also be shown on free-to-air television after FC Bayern Munich has moved in. ZDF will broadcast the match between the German soccer champions and Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday (9 p.m.) in the Estádio da Luz, alongside the pay TV channel Sky and the streaming service DAZN.

Bayern prevailed 3-0 in the semi-finals against Olympique Lyon on Wednesday. Paris Saint-Germain and German coach Thomas Tuchel had already entered the final the day before with a win against RB Leipzig.

According to the Interstate Broadcasting Treaty, a final with German participation in the premier class must also be shown on free TV, since major events "of considerable social importance" should be accessible to everyone. This includes "finals of the European club championships in football with German participation".

Even before the start of the final tournament in the Portuguese capital, the public broadcaster announced that it had reached an agreement with the European Football Union Uefa and the rights holders Sky and DAZN. However, if the final had taken place without German participation, it would not have been broadcast by ZDF. No agreement could be reached in this constellation.

Until 2018, ZDF had shown one Champions League game per game day and the finals for six years. After that, the broadcasts of the premier class disappeared completely behind the payment barrier due to the contract that was currently running until the end of the coming season.

In the future TV contract for the Champions League, ZDF has secured the rights to the finals from 2022 to 2024. At the same time, the finals can also be seen on DAZN. The streaming service has acquired the rights to 121 of the 137 games per Champions League season in the new contract. For Sky, on the other hand, the end of broadcasting is after the coming season in Europe's premier class.
