Hamburg (dpa) - According to a report by the "Hamburger Abendblatt", Hamburger SV needs up to 30 million euros to modernize the Volksparkstadion for the 2024 European Football Championship.
The newspaper refers to an internal thesis paper on the necessary renovation work. The second division owns the arena. The financially tight HSV is hoping for support from the city.
The State Council of the Interior and Sports Authority, Christoph Holstein, was reluctant, however. "This is conceivable for a few, selected investment measures that are required by UEFA as binding for the European Championship games and that are not covered by the extensive stadium agreement with the DFB," he told the "Abendblatt". Ultimately, it is about taxpayers' money.
In addition to Hamburg, Frankfurt / Main, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Cologne, Leipzig, Berlin, Stuttgart and Munich are the locations for the EM in four years' time in Germany.
