The winners and the hostesses - everyone knows the Bold. It should change
Photo: MARCO BERTORELLO / AFPAt the Tour de France, according to media reports, the stage winners will in future be framed by a woman and a man on the podium at the award ceremony. The organizer will replace one of the normally two hostesses from the coming edition of the cycling tour in France with a man, reports the daily newspaper "Le Parisien", referring to tour director Christian Prudhomme. It is an innovation, said Prudhomme. "But we've done it for 20 years in other races like Liège-Bastogne-Liège."
In recent years, in the wake of a debate about sexism, there has been increasing criticism of the role of women at sporting events and award ceremonies. In 2019, a petition against the hostesses on the winners' podium was signed by almost 38,000 people, the report said. Women are not objects and are not used for decoration, it said in the text of the petition, which called for the abolition of hostesses.
According to the report, Prudhomme left it open whether the hostess will continue to kiss the winner of the day on the cheek. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is unlikely that the tradition will be maintained anyway. The Tour de France starts in Nice on August 29th.
