Mbappé, Ben Yedder, Dembélé ... Who will finish top scorer in Ligue 1?

2020-08-22T22:25:09.467Z

The new Ligue 1 season begins this weekend. Who will finish top scorer and succeed Wissam Ben Yedder and Kylian Mbappé, both authors of 18 goals in 2019-2020?

Favorites

Wissam Ben Yedder and Kylian Mbappé, Ligue 1 co-top scorers in 2019-2020 with 18 goals each, logically serve as favorites. The Monegasque will certainly be the orphan of his attacking friend Islam Slimani, returned to Leicester, but the arrival of Niko Kovac could allow the club of the Rock to replay the leading roles. With a more domineering ASM it would not be surprising to see the player trained in Téfécé get more chances than the previous season. He could thus let speak his spontaneity and his coolness in front of the goals. For his part, Kylian Mbappé should continue to shine with Paris Saint-Germain. In a formation which should again master most of its meetings, the French international - thanks to his qualities - should obtain several dangerous situations per match. He thus has the capacity to reach and exceed the 30-goal mark, as in 2018-2019 (33 goals).

The outsiders

The outsiders are numerous. Mauro Icardi, author of a mixed first season in Ligue 1, should undoubtedly shake the nets repeatedly given his sense of goal. He will still have to keep the confidence of Thomas Tuchel in order to have a significant playing time. Neymar, thanks to his inherent talent, and if he achieves a full season without injury, should also score many goals. He might not be very far from the favorites. At the Olympique de Marseille, Dario Benedetto and Florian Thauvin are also outsiders. The first scored 11 goals for his first season in a team that was sometimes borrowed offensively due to the absence of the 2018 World Champion. It would not be surprising to see him increase his statistics in 2020-2021 with his experience of Ligue 1 and the return of the French international. Florian Thauvin, meanwhile, is coming back from a big injury. He will be very motivated to regain his level and regain his place in the French team to take part in Euro 2020. He is capable, as in 2017-2018 (22), of scoring more than 20 goals this season. Olympique Lyonnais also has two outsiders in its ranks with Moussa Dembélé and Memphis Depay, if of course they do not leave the Rhone club this summer. The French, author of 16 goals in 2019-2020, has all the qualities to string together the achievements and go titillate the favorites. Especially since his team, not qualified for a European competition, will be focused on the championship. The Dutchman, if he finds his level which was his before his injury, could well join the fight, he who had started the 2019-2020 season with a bang with 9 goals in the first 13 days.

To not forget

We are also not immune to a surprise and other names should be highlighted. This is particularly the case of Rennais M'baye Niang (10 goals in 2019-2020) who could well see his statistics increase if ever the Breton club plays the podium again. Kasper Dolberg (11 goals in 2019-2020), the center-forward of OGC Nice, could for his part benefit from the evolution of the Aiglons project in order to be even more decisive. Andy Delort (9 goals in 2019-2020) and Habib Diallo (12 goals in 2019-2020) are also to be mentioned. It will also be necessary to watch the arrival in Ligue 1 of Jonathan David, the Lille rookie, of Yoane Wissa, promoted with Lorient, or of Adrian Grbic, who signed up with the Merlus this summer.
