Bilbao (AP) - The soccer women of FC Bayern Munich were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The Germans lost to the cup defender Olympique Lyon in the quarter-finals of the final tournament in Bilbao, Spain, after a big fight with 1: 2 (0: 1) on Saturday evening.
Nikita Parris had brought the favorite to the trophy after 41 minutes, which Amel Majri (59th) extended. After the connection by Carolin Simon (64th), Sydney Lohmann still had the chance to equalize in the 79th minute, but only hit the crossbar. In the semifinals, Lyon will face Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, who defeated Arsenal Ladies 2-1 (1-1).
Bayern started very defensively and tried to disrupt the favorite's game early on. That worked brilliantly. Lyon with his rather inconspicuous German playmaker Dszenifer Maroszan only rarely came into the penalty area of the Munich team in the first section, who mostly attacked the opponent in possession with two or three players and thus provoked errors.
There was almost nothing to do for Laura Benkarth in the Bayern goal, but she didn't look good when she conceded. With a lob into the penalty area, she broke away from the line too late, defender Kristin Demann had speculated on the goalkeeper running out, which enabled Parris to head relatively unhindered and to take the lead that was surprising at the time.
After the break, coach Jens Scheuer's team worked more offensively, which gave Lyon more opportunities in attack. One of them led to the 0-2.
