The US Open 2020 is over for Andy Murray.
Two days after his five-sentence show of strength in the first round, the former world number one from Scotland clearly failed on Thursday (local time) against the 20-year-old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
After 2:07 hours, the number 15 seeded shooting star used his first match ball to 6: 2, 6: 3, 6: 4.
On Tuesday, Murray had the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka in the first Grand Slam tournament after the Corona break in 4:38 hours 4: 6, 4: 6, 7: 6 (7: 5), 7: 6 (7: 4 ), 6: 4 defeated.
But in the second round, the 2012 US Open champion had no chance.
"The more tournaments and matches you play, the more you get the robustness for your body back," said Murray, who wanted to end his career in early 2019 because of another operation on his hip.
But after the defeat at the Australian Open, he decided to continue his career and now for the first time in around 20 months competed in a Grand Slam tournament.
Immediately after the US Open, he announced that he would only play the French Open on clay "as things stand".
Auger-Aliassime said after his success that he always had the thought in the back of his mind to face a champion like Murray.
"Even if you lead in two sentences, you never know what tricks he has in his pocket:" It's not an everyday second round. "
Asarenka, Williams and Thiem continue
The Austrian
Dominic Thiem also
reached the third round.
