Unusual sight on the podium: Pierre Gasly has won the Italian Grand Prix.

The Alpha Tauri driver benefited from a time penalty against world champion Lewis Hamilton, who had long been the clear leader, and secured his first Grand Prix victory from Carlos Sainz (McLaren) and Lance Stroll (Racing Point).

Lewis Hamilton only came in seventh and has to wait for his 90th win.

For Sebastian Vettel the race ended early.

"The line has exploded. I have no more brake pedal," he radioed into the pits on lap five.

Flames broke out from Vettel's left rear wheel on the way back to the garage.

He had previously had to take the way out of a chicane and raced through styrofoam stands.

Halfway through the race, Charles Leclerc, the second Ferrari, also slipped out of the race.

He crashed into the tire wall with great force, but was unharmed.

"The drop is sucked," said Vettel afterwards on RTL, "this year will remain difficult, and next year will no longer affect me. The team has chosen a different direction than me."

At the end of the season, Vettel has to leave Ferrari.

"You keep thinking, it doesn't get any worse. But apparently things are still worse this year."
