Youthful research

Lucien Favre let go of the teenagers - and was rewarded. Marco Rose's ideas failed. A penalty kick left room for philosophical reflection.

The return

: The time of canning jubilation is - for the time being - over.

In the Signal-Iduna-Park, 9,300 spectators ensured an atmosphere that has not been seen in the Bundesliga for six months.

In the case of fouls, people shouted and cheered when duels were won.

It can go on like this if the circumstances permit.

The result:

Borussia Dortmund won their opening game of the 2020/2021 season 3-0 (1-0) against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The first half:

The top game met expectations from the start.

In a fast-paced and intense game, Dortmund's attacker Erling Haaland had the first chance (22nd minute), Jonas Hofmann on the other side offered the greatest opportunity for the guests (32nd).

The lead came from a collaboration between the two 17-year-olds on the pitch: On his league debut, Jude Bellingham put the ball out to the half-right to Giovanni Reyna, who pulled into the far corner and scored to 1-0 - Gladbach's goalkeeper Yann Sommer had no chance to defend himself (35 .).

Five minutes later, after a cross from Emre Can, a header from Jadon Sanchos hit the crossbar.

Youthful:

Julian Brandt, Thomas Delaney and Marco Reus first took a seat on the BVB bench, coach Lucien Favre put his trust in the two teenagers Reyna and Bellingham.

The Swiss obviously does not want to be accused of lacking courage in his third year in Dortmund, the obvious talent of the gifted and the supportive shoulder of the experienced players like Mats Hummels or Axel Witsel make this decision seem logical.

For the young Briton it was over after 67 minutes, he was said goodbye to much applause.

Reyna should have another big appearance in the second half.

The second half:

A tackle decided the game - that of Ramy Bensebaini.

In the 52nd minute, the Gladbacher touched his opponent Reyna in the penalty area with the leg that was pulled.

That was favorable for him, because his flight, which had already been scheduled, was given the touch of justification.

Referee Felix Brynch looked at it several times on the screen and decided on a penalty.

A whistle somewhere in the tension between can, must and may.

Haaland took it less philosophically and turned dust-dry (54th).

In the 78th minute, BVB set an exemplary counterattack, which Haaland completed after a great sprint from Jadon Sancho.

Incidentally, Haaland is 20 years old, as is Sancho.

The series lasts:

BVB had won ten times in a row against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Duel number eleven also went to Dortmund.

Briefly blown away the dust and opened the history books: The last Gladbach victory was the victorious coach Favre, the defeated Jürgen Klopp, at BVB the current Gladbacher Matthias Ginter sat on the bench, at VfL the current Dortmunders Thorgan Hazard and Mahmoud Dahoud came from the same .

Outside it counts:

Even without the strong outside of the previous season, Achraf Hakimi and Raphaël Guerreiro, BVB was not taken by surprise by Marco Rose's considerations.

The Gladbach coach wanted to score points on the right with a Stefan Lainer supported by Ginter, on the left with Bensebaini and Oscar Wendt close the side against Sancho.

Both should have looked better on the tactics board than on the pitch.

Generation Passlack:

Between all the jewels and super talents suddenly someone popped up who was also viewed with a lot of hope years ago: Felix Passlack, most recently awarded to Norwich City and Fortuna Sittard, had to play on the left side after Hazard's early injury and did so very, very neat.

Passlack is now 22 years old, so by BVB standards already a more sedate player.

Bayern and BVB:

Bayern Munich won 8-0 against Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund 3-0 against Mönchengladbach.

What does that tell us?

Well, the battles of the past will also be the battles of the future.

We don't have to wait long for the first big duel between the two: On September 30th (8.30 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de) there will be a clash in the Supercup.

The Gladbachers will have to fight for first place behind the first two places on Saturday - then Union Berlin will travel to the Lower Rhine.
