Bryson DeChambeau was a different golfer in the past.
The 27-year-old American studied physics before he started his professional career. He wants to improve his sport with scientific knowledge and is already fighting with the rulers in golf for new clubs or instruments.
DeChambeau has now won the US Open, winning a major tournament in his career.
This was also made possible by his training during the Corona break.
According to his own statement, the world number nine put on more than 20 kilograms in muscles in a short time, made possible by meticulous dumbbell training and liters of protein shakes.
At the award ceremony at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, his muscular arms were easy to see.
DeChambeau conquered the difficult par 70 course at the end on Sunday with a round of 67 and thus as the only professional golf player below the course standard.
He won with a total of 274 strokes in front of his compatriot Matthew Wolf (280), who was still leading after the third day, but then broke.
DeChambeau hits 350 meters
As powerful as one would expect from a muscleman, DeChambeau also knocks off.
If he hits the little white ball correctly, it can sometimes lie beyond the 350-meter mark.
He offends purists and traditionalists. In the USA there is a debate about whether one has to adapt the rules - golf should continue to be a sport in which one has to master many different techniques and situations.
With his powerful approach, DeChambeau only hit 23 of 56 fairways on the four days of the tournament, which is a very poor value compared to other top golfers.
Nevertheless, it approached the holes so well that it compensated for the higher grass next to the fairways.
At this US Open, it was also about proving to himself and everyone else that it works.
"One hundred percent, no doubt about it," said DeChambeau, also known as the "mad scientist" in golf circles.
"For me, this journey is about whether I can repeat every stroke better than anyone else. I was able to do that this week. That's why I won by six strokes."
