After confusion about his corona tests, the French tennis professional Benoît Paire gave up at the ATP tournament at Rothenbaum in Hamburg.
Number 25 in the world rankings was 4: 6 and 0: 2 behind in his first round match against Casper Ruud from Norway when he finished the match due to exhaustion.
The 31-year-old then reported that he was twice positive in the Hanseatic city, but tested negative on Tuesday.
He felt tired in his match and left the pitch prematurely.
Officially, the task was justified with stomach pain.
"Since tennis started again, I'm just tired. It's no life for me," he said at the press conference after the game.
Tournament doctor Volker Carrero then specified the procedure for Paire.
"This interplay between positive and negative tests is not unusual. The first two tests were positive, but the test person was not infectious. The third test was negative," said the doctor.
Paire was only tested once more in Hamburg because the ATP stipulated this.
"It is by no means unusual that there were these results," the tournament doctor is quoted as saying in the "Tagesspiegel".
The responsible health department had given permission to play: "Everything was carried out according to scientific standards and as required by the law."
Paire had already tested positive before the US Open in New York and was then removed from the tournament.
A few days after the positive result, a negative one followed in the quarantine.
Paire wants to take part in the French Open in Paris, which starts on Sunday - if the required corona tests are negative.
