UEFA player of the year: Neymar and Mbappé out of the top three

UEFA unveiled the finalists for its player of the year trophy on Wednesday.

The most prestigious on the continent behind the France Football Ballon d'Or.

The European body relies on "a jury made up of coaches from the 80 clubs which have played in the group stages of the Champions League and the Europa League and 55 journalists, each representing one of the member associations of UEFA" .

Voters had to award 5, 3 and 1 points to their favorites.

The winner will be revealed during the draw for the next European campaign, on October 1 in Nyon (Switzerland).

We already know that despite the PSG final, lost against Bayern Munich (0-1), no Parisian star is among the finalists.

Two representatives of the winning German club are among the trio of contenders: striker Robert Lewandowski (15 goals in the Champions League) and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

They are joined by Manchester City attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

The two best Parisians in the ranking are Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.

Indeed, the top 10 has already been unveiled, with the exception of the top trio.

Neymar finished fourth, tied on points with his former teammate Lionel Messi (53 points).

The Frenchman is 7th with 39 points, behind Thomas Muller, but ahead of Thiago Alcantara, Joshua Kimmich and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Consolation prizes for Parisians

As for the coaches, Thomas Tuchel is not on the podium, despite the performance achieved in taking Paris to the final of the Champions League for the first time.

The German manager finished 4th, with 76 points.

The winner will be among Hansi Flick (Bayern Munich), Jürgen Klopp (Liverpool) and Julian Nagelsmann (RB Leipzig).

Lyon coach Rudi Garcia finished 7th after his team's exploits against Juventus Turin and Manchester City, one row ahead of Zinedine Zidane, 8th.

The PSG women's team, eliminated in the semi-final by Lyon, has no more success.

Coach Olivier Echouafni finished 6th and Marie-Antoinette Katoto is 9th in a trophy for which Lyon captain Wendie Renard is a finalist.

The Parisians could, on the other hand, win several consolation prizes.

Goalkeeper Keylor Navas is named among the three best goalkeepers of the year, while Kylian Mbappé and Neymar appear alongside Lewandowski in the top three for the striker of the year trophy.

Thiago Silva finished 5th in the defenders classification and Marquinhos 8th.

The new PSG captain is also 5th in midfield of the year, four places ahead of Angel Di Maria.

The Argentinian is also 9th in the attackers' classification.
