He's the most expensive player so far this summer, but Kai Havertz struggled on his first two appearances in the Chelsea jersey. Against second division Barnsley it was quite different.

Chelsea FC are in the round of 16 of the English League Cup, thanks to Kai Havertz.

The international met the Blues 6-0 (2-0) on Wednesday evening against second division FC Barnsley in the 28th, 55th and 65th minute.

For the 21-year-old, who moved from Bayer Leverkusen to London at the beginning of September for almost 80 million euros, it was the first goal in the Chelsea jersey.

"That was the first of many great evenings for him," said team manager Frank Lampard of Havertz.

The game was an "excellent experience" for the newbie.

Havertz had a hard time in his first two appearances in the Chelsea shirt.

Against the hopeless Barnsley, currently 20th of 24 teams in the second division, Havertz scored in his first goal from close range, shortly before the 3-0 by Ross Barkley (49th minute) he captured the ball with a tackle : 0 hit the offensive player centrally from a good twelve meters, on his third goal he tunneled the rushed goalkeeper, shot into the empty goal and was immediately allowed to leave the field.

Werner is spared, Abraham meets

Timo Werner, who joined the Blues from RB Leipzig in the summer, sat on the bench for the entire duration of the game - he should have been spared.

In contrast to Havertz, Werner played 90 minutes last Sunday against Liverpool (0: 2), the next game for the club is on Saturday at West Brom.

But against Barsnley, Tammy Abraham (19th) and Olivier Giroud (83rd), willing to change, were also successful at Stamford Bridge.

Defender Antonio Rüdiger was again not in the squad.

According to "kicker" information, the 27-year-old should be facing a move to FC Barcelona or his ex-club AS Roma.

The Londoners now meet Leyton Orient or Tottenham Hotspur.

The third-round duel was canceled due to a corona outbreak among several Leyton players.

Arsenal FC also reached the fourth round of the League Cup.

The Gunners prevailed against league rivals Leicester City 2-0 (0-0).

The former Schalke player Christian Fuchs (57th) had an own goal.

Eddie Nketiah (90.) raised for Arsenal just before the final whistle.

The next opponent is the winner of the clash between Liverpool and third division Lincoln City on Thursday (8.45 p.m.; Stream: DAZN).
