International soccer player Timo Werner scored for Chelsea for the first time - and was eliminated with the Blues in the English League Cup.
Chelsea lost the London city duel at Tottenham Hotspur 4: 5 on penalties in the round of 16, after 90 minutes it had been 1: 1 (1: 0).
Even in the first half, the guests appeared superior.
Werner (19th), who came from RB Leipzig in the summer, hit hard from the back area and placed in the lower right corner.
Tottenham earned a late equalizer in the second half from Erik Lamela (83rd).
Mason Mount missed Chelsea on penalties, Werner was not among the shooters.
New arrival Kai Havertz, in the third round match against second division FC Barnsley (5-0) with three goals, was only on the bench against Tottenham.
National team colleague Antonio Rüdiger was again not part of team manager Frank Lampard's squad.
Tottenham with four games in eight days
Tottenham's team manager José Mourinho initially did without captain Harry Kane against his ex-club, the striker only came off the bench in the 70th minute.
Returning Gareth Bale, on loan from Real Madrid, was not yet on the squad.
The Spurs are currently in the middle of a tight competitive marathon: They only played 1-1 against Newcastle United on Sunday, and the Europa League qualification against Maccabi Haifa will continue on Thursday.
The other eighth finals of the EFL Cup will be played on Wednesday and Thursday, the most prominent pairing forms the end: Liverpool FC with star coach Jürgen Klopp welcomes Arsenal FC (Thursday, 8.45 p.m. / DAZN).
It was only on Monday that the Reds won the duel in the league 3-1.
