Yvan Mendy had not fought for more than ten months because of the health crisis.

On Saturday, at the Marcel-Cerdan sports center in Levallois (Hauts-de-Seine), the light weight of BCO Pont won unanimously by the judges (78-74, 79-73, 79, 73) against the Tourangeau Alain Christian Sangue, at the end of a controlled duel.

This 45th victory of his career (for 5 defeats and a draw) allows the Pontois to set out again in search of a World Championship, which he hopes to be able to play next year.

How do you see your victory for your comeback?

YVAN MENDY.

I wanted to mark the occasion by winning before the limit but I did not succeed.

Due to the long period of inactivity, I had to adjust during the fight between the moments of explosiveness and the flow of blows, it was complicated.

I gave myself, it was not a victory foretold, and I ended up stiff.

Especially since I had everything to lose.

How do you explain that you did not manage to cut short the debates, while your opponent seemed in difficulty during the first part of the fight?

He also changed his strategy.

Initially, he accepted the confrontation, and was severely affected.

Then he decided to change his style, to shoot a lot more, he wanted to stick.

I regularly run into guys like that who recoil, the blows are then amortized.

You had not fought since December 2019. How did you experience this period of forced rest?

In January and February, I served as sparring partner for Guillaume Frénois, so I continued training.

Then, the confinement did me a lot of good.

I was able to rest, recharge my batteries with my family, which my daily life does not really allow me.

The desire to return to the ring did not come back to me until May.

I then prepared for the fight at Cap d'Agde on August 29, which was finally canceled.

It's a shame, because I was at my peak of form.

But I put it into perspective, the most important thing was to stop the spread of the virus.

You said the same year that you could no longer waste time with a view to a World Championship ...

I realize today that the boxers who beat me in the world rankings are starting to have big dates again, like Devin Haney, Vasyl Lomachenko or Mikey Garcia.

For my part, I feel that I have lost some automatisms.

Things need to flow together, that I have an important deadline in the next ten months.

My career is going to be played out now.

The health crisis will determine the rest.

If I have to go to England or the United States, maybe I should observe a period of quarantine, plus the borders can be closed.

After that, I will take whatever it takes to move up the rankings, regardless of location or opponent.

Anyway, I never refused much.

Your goal of world crowning therefore remains unchanged ...

Yes.

The motivation is still there.

Anyway, we can't box without that, we still put our physical integrity at stake. I hope to have a chance in the World Championship in 2021, I pray for that.

This is the only goal that keeps me going today.
