For almost two and a half decades, Giora Antman worked as a goalkeeping coach at Maccabi Haifa.
As part of his work in Carmel, he coached and praised leading goalkeepers such as Nir Davidovich and Dudu Awat, advised young goalkeepers who grew up in the youth department, was a partner in the club's journey to the top of Israeli football and won coaching the Israeli national team during Eli Gutman.
Now at a time when the position of the first goalkeeper in the team is once again provoking controversy, one of the esteemed professionals in our districts has taken the time to give his doctrine on the situation.
"I do not think we are failing to produce goalkeepers. The senior goalkeepers in Israel have been in periods of instability, of injuries, of bad luck. Ariel Harush, for example, came to BS and things did not work out for him.
There is no shortage of goalkeepers here.
There is a problem with the attitude they receive, "Antman began defensively.
What did you think of when you saw Ophir Marciano's mistake and how do you pick up a goalkeeper after such an incident?
"It's not easy to see such a case. Even if we were to lead 0: 6 it would have left a bad taste, but it is impossible to finish Ophir. "I am sure he will recover from this. In such cases, a lot of mental conversations have to be made, see the case, show him similar cases and make him understand that he is not alone."
What do you think of the public criticism of him by Willy Rotensteiner?
"I do not like coaches being criticized in this way. It is something that does not add respect to anyone and could have been avoided. I still think Marciano will continue to be on the squad and I would not be surprised if he also continues to get the place in the squad."

In the last decade, Premier League teams have neglected the Israeli goalkeeper and preferred to leave the reins in the hands of foreign goalkeepers.
For Antman, new thinking needs to be developed.
"There are countries like Serbia, where only local goalkeepers are allowed to participate. Maybe we should go this route, that way Israeli goalkeepers will accumulate minutes, get opportunities at an early age and that is probably how they will progress."
Other than the opportunity they were given, what made Awat and Davidovich the standout goalkeepers?
"From a very young age they saw it was something else. Their potential was tremendous from the start. They were very mentally strong, very talented. People tend to underestimate Awat's career, but he played for a decade in the Spanish league. He was a cat with high mental abilities. If there were cases Where he would get a goal through his own fault, he would know how to rise and correct immediately afterwards. Nir was unlucky because of the injuries. He could have gone much further and of course played abroad as well.

"Develop a quiet mentality"
This summer, Barak Bachar was appointed coach of Maccabi Haifa and decided to bring a fresh coaching staff with him.
Antman said goodbye to the Greens and chose to change phase when he was appointed goalkeeping coach in the youth department of Hapoel Raj. Despite the satisfying work in the seniors, Antman is excited about the new way. "I thank Raj for the opportunity, I give my all and the most I can to grow "The next 'Shuli Gilardi' is a challenging job, very enjoyable and mostly satisfying. It's a privilege to work with young people."
At the same time he is currently working on opening an academy in the Hefer Valley where he can use his experience to raise a new generation of goalkeepers.
"I'm in touch with coaches from all over Europe, I'm undergoing training and I always want to learn. I know the latest training methods and the goal is to grow quality goalkeepers. I think it is very important that all teams bring quality goalkeeping coaches, give them the conditions, fair pay and be possible. See results. "
What are the conditions needed to grow a good goalkeeper?
"Today a goalkeeper needs good physical data, correct height, strength, instincts and at the same time be a person who can work hard. Children need to know that unlike other positions on the field, the goalkeeper needs a special character. The perception that goalkeepers should be crazy as in the past has passed. To instill confidence and know how to overcome falls. "
What do you think about the start of the season of Maccabi Haifa?
I think Haifa is a senior candidate to win the championship, and if it does not win the championship this year it will be only because of an instinct for self-destruction.
