Emmanuel Macron's speech: professional sport survives re-containment

2020-10-28T22:11:47.932Z

Unlike the first spring confinement, professional championships, like Ligue 1, will be able to continue with matches

During his speech, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron did not specify, this Wednesday, what would be the consequences of the re-containment for high-level and amateur sport.

Between the Elysée, the Ministry of Sports and the Federations, the last arbitrations must be completed this Thursday.

Prime Minister Jean Castex should then unveil the modalities of application of confinement and the exceptions for athletes.

But we can already identify three major trends.

The high level continues

Unlike March and April, professional sport and high level will continue.

This time, we will therefore not relive the sad quarrels and passing of arms between the presidents of the football clubs who had enamelled the first confinement.

Pro A football, according to our information, has received assurances of being able to continue its Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. The matches will take place behind closed doors.

As for the FFF, we were still waiting for the National (3rd division) and the D1 Women, but the trend would also be to continue.

Regarding rugby, the Top 14 should not stop, either.

On the other hand, the absence of public will certainly push several professional leagues, to temporarily stop their season.

Those of basketball, handball and volleyball had, in fact, voted in favor of an interruption of the championships as long as it would not be possible to play in front of spectators.

Basketball and volleyball should officially endorse this break this Thursday.

As early as Wednesday evening, the National Basketball League announced the suspension of the 7th day of Jeep Elite and the 4th day of Pro B, next weekend A new steering committee will be meeting this Thursday or Friday to lengthen or not the duration of this break from the Championships.

For individual sports, unless there is a turnaround, high-level athletes, such as those from INSEP, should also be allowed to continue their activities.

The sailors of the Vendée Globe, whose departure is scheduled for November 7, will also be able to set off from Sables-d'Olonne.

The protocol provides for confinement of sailors from October 31 (some already are) with tests.

Amateur sport on hiatus

On the other hand, amateur sport will stop at least until the beginning of December, or even until January 2021. As for the FFF, it will be announced this Thursday.

Many clubs, subject to difficulties in training because of the curfew, had already demanded for ten days, well before the announcement of this reconfinement.

While some federations initially wanted to benefit from exemptions similar to those granted to pro sport, others, like volleyball, have already taken the decision to stop their amateur championships.

More debates on young people

This is the thorniest point on which the discussions are proving to be lively and which will require the final arbitrations.

The FFF thus hopes to maintain an activity for minors, like its football schools, at least for training.

Sport being a place of socialization like school, many consider that clubs must remain open on the same principle as schools, colleges and high schools.

A speech heard by the Ministry of Sports which also defended the fact that sports clubs were places of reception for children allowing parents to continue their professional activities.

While a surprise cannot be ruled out, the trend was also Wednesday evening to put sports activities on a break for minors.
