Formula 1: Pierre Gasly extends his contract at Alpha Tauri

2020-10-28T12:29:53.300Z

The performance of the French driver this season could give him hope for promotion in the Red Bull team. This will not be the case.

“Yes, he stays”.

A tweet this Wednesday from the Italian Formula 1 team Alpha Tauri sold off on Pierre Gasly's one-year extension.

The French driver will live the 2022 season in the seat of the transalpine team formerly called Toro Rosso and which is none other than the satellite team of Red Bull.

If the tricolor achieves an excellent championship with in particular his first victory in F1 on the circuit of Monza last September, he could hope to find the ranks of Red Bull from which he had been ousted in the middle of the 2019 season for lack of results.

So this will not be the case.

The first French winner of a Grand Prix since 1996 will therefore continue his career in a second-tier team.

"I am very happy to stay with the AlphaTauri team for another season," nevertheless assures Gasly in the press release published by the Italian team with whom he made his grand debut in F1 in 2017. "This year is going very well and we are on the way to having our best season, ”he adds.

If the young Frenchman is in 9th place in the drivers' classification, his team is in 7th place in that of the constructors.

"We have an excellent relationship and have managed to seize all the opportunities that presented themselves, the best being the Italian Grand Prix," concludes Gasly, 24.

Red Bull, which runs with the young Dutch driver Max Verstappen and the Thai Alexander Albon, has therefore not opted for the reunion under the same banner of the French and the Batavian who had already rubbed shoulders in the Austrian team in 2019. However, the mixed results of Albon (8th in the drivers' standings, only one point Gasly) could have given the Habs hope for a comeback.

"I am delighted that Pierre is staying with us"

Unsurprisingly, Alpha Tauri was pleased to keep the French driver in his ranks.

"I am delighted that Pierre is staying with us for 2021. He has been part of the Red Bull young driver squad for many years and I hope he will remain in the Red Bull family for many more seasons to come," said , for his part, Franz Tost, the team manager of Alpha Tauri.

But the world of F1 will have noted that the contract extension only runs for one season if we refer to the official press release.

Gasly will therefore be on the transfer market next year.

The Norman has the perfect opportunity this weekend to showcase all his talent, which the paddock has no doubt, during the GP of Emilia-Romagna.

The circuit is in fact located in Imola not far from the Alpha Tauri headquarters, located in Faenza.
