Champions League: RB Leipzig takes revenge against Paris Saint-Germain

2020-11-04T23:44:41.088Z

Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann had never won against his sponsor Thomas Tuchel. In the rematch against Paris in the Champions League, this was the first time - but against a squad without the stars.

The scenes of the game:

The Champions League game between RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain was not lacking in speed, the technical level was also appealing.

But apart from a few early Paris opportunities, it was safe.

Two hand penalty scenes, one on each side, provided the most exciting moments.

The guests forgave, the Leipzigers took their chance and won the game.

Result:

Leipzig benefited from a penalty against Paris in the second half, Emil Forsberg used it to make it 2-1 (57th minute).

In Group H, the Bundesliga club is in second place with six points because Manchester United have a better goal difference despite their defeat against Basaksehir.

PSG are third with three points.

Parisians without shine:

The list of injured was long on the side of the guests, not only record transfer Neymar was canceled.

There were also Kylian Mbappé, Mauro Icardi, Marco Verratti and the German national player Julian Draxler.

The absence of these top performers was noticeable, although it initially looked as if Paris were also playing with substitutes in a different class than Leipzig.

The first half:

Leipzig fell behind in the sixth minute when central defender Dayot Upamecano lost a duel with Moise Kean, who was preparing for Ángel Di María (6th minute).

On the other hand, PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas showed an outstanding save against Amadou Haidara from close range (8th).

In return, his Leipzig counterpart Péter Gulácsi held a hand penalty shot by Di María (16th).

Twice the last pass of the Parisians came too late, the goals of Di María (38th) and Sarabia (40th) were whistled back for offside, before Christopher Nkunku made it 1-1 with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area (42nd).

Old love:

When he was 13 years old, Nkunku, who grew up only half an hour's drive from Paris, moved to the French serial champion's youth department.

Against his hometown club, the 22-year-old often offered himself in the opposing half, but also made defensive runs and pressed 90 minutes.

And then there was his single action to compensate.

Finally equal:

he expected "high pressing" and an overall more offensive approach from his former protégé's team, Tuchel had said before the game.

In Augsburg, the 47-year-old had Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann spotted his opponents after their career ended.

It was the beginning of the career of the talented coach.

In the Bundesliga, teachers and students met twice - a draw, a victory for Tuchel - Nagelsmann had no chance with RB two and a half months ago against Tuchel's PSG.

In the vote for Europe's coach of the year, the younger came third ahead of the older.

Now he has also won the direct comparison.

The second half:

The Parisians could no longer free themselves from Nagelsmann's pressing so well.

After winning the ball, the ways were short for RB, after quick combinations they already came into the attack third, for example when Forsberg loaded Danilo Pereira, but then shot over the goal (53rd).

Shortly thereafter, an Angelino cross to the Swede flew into the penalty area, but too far.

But Forsberg, and all of his teammates as well, threw up his complaint arm - and was right.

Presnel Kimpembe got hold of the ball, Forsberg converted the penalty (57.).

Doubly stupid:

After falling behind, the game completely derailed for the guests.

Because he played against Haidara with an open sole, Idrissa Gueye saw his second yellow card and was thrown off the pitch (69th).

Outnumbered PSG only managed a little, on top of that Kimpembe topped his game-decisive handball with a blunt tackle in stoppage time: from behind he jumped Yussuf Poulsen in the legs and saw yellow-red (90. + 5).

A red card would have been okay here too.

A matter of opinion:

Ex-Schalke Thilo Kehrer came into the game in the 73rd minute, when his team was already 1: 2 behind.

After the half-time break, his team "simply lost control" and no longer played clever, said the 24-year-old German international on Sky.

Paris was infected "by the hectic style of play" of the hosts.

From his point of view, the event may have seemed hectic, but the Leipzigers pressed vigorously, but above all objectively and focused.

That was evidently a little too fast for Kehrer.
