Summary: Scotland's win over Serbia after penalties (Sport 1)

Scotland assistant coach John Carver will be on the pitch at the Netanya stadium in four days on crutches, or at best lame - when Israel hosts the British team in the last game of the League of Nations qualifiers.

So why on crutches?

The 55-year-old Englishman, who serves as one of Steve Clark's assistants, was injured during the Euro 2020 promotion celebrations, just after Scotland beat Serbia 4-5 on penalties on Thursday.

"It was awkward," he admitted today.

Carver may have been a football player who spent most of his short career in Little Ghosthead, but the days when he was fit, far behind him.

"Right after the miss we went out for a sprint, but after five steps Woods tried to knock me down and the extra assistant, Stephen Reed, jumped on my back. At that moment I felt like someone had shot me in the market. It hurt so much."

Carver worked for many years as an assistant and interim coach at Newcastle where he met Steve Clark.

He also stood on the lines of Toronto from the MLS and Omonia Nicosia and about two and a half months ago was called up by his longtime teammate in Scotland.

Today he added: "I may be English, but I gave everything to Scotland from the moment I arrived. Also a tear in my calf muscle."
