The coffin was transported in an ambulance accompanied by an important security device.
Around, thousands of admirers singing supporters' songs and mourning their dead idol.
In front of the presidential palace (Casa Rosada), the queue to take leave of the 1986 world champion, who died at the age of 60 of a heart attack, was already long.
Three days of national mourning
The wake for the general public will take place Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. local (8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in France), a statement from the presidency said.
The idol's ex-wife, Claudia Villafañe, and their two daughters Dalma and Gianinna, had visited Casa Rosada shortly before midnight.

Following them came the president of the Argentinian Football Federation (AFA), Claudio Tapia, and active or retired players, including teammates of Maradona from the epic of the 1986 World Cup, won by the Albiceleste in Mexico.

Maradona's death occurred at noon on Wednesday at his home in the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires, as the former player was recovering from brain surgery.
