Thieves took advantage of the funeral of the hero of the 1982 Football World Cup to rob his home on Saturday.

A scandalous act of infinite sadness.

The home of Italian footballer Paolo Rossi, who died on Wednesday at the age of 64, was robbed on Saturday… during his funeral.

It was his widow Federica Cappelletti who made this macabre discovery as she returned to Bucine, southwest of Florence, after her late husband's funeral which took place near Vicenza.

Rossi and his family lived in Poggio Cennina, on a hill overlooking the Val d'Ambra, where the former footballer ran an agriturismo and an organic farm.

The thieves allegedly forced a window into the house.

Their booty would amount to a few hundred euros and some jewelry, including a watch belonging to the hero of the 1982 World Cup in Spain in which he carried Squadra Azzurra to the title with his six goals.

But they would not have touched the objects and trophies linked to the footballer's career.

An investigation is underway.

This weekend is marked by the tributes to the former center-forward on the Italian football fields.

All the players wore a black armband, arriving on the pitch in memory of Paolo Rossi.

A minute's silence was observed in the stadiums with photos of the calcio legend projected on large screens with the words “heroes never die” and “Ciao Paolo”.

But some did not have the decency to respect this day of mourning.
