Relatively spared by the pandemic at the start of the events (3,700 deaths in total), Japan has been facing a third wave of contaminations for two months stronger than those of spring and summer.
There are currently 6,000 new cases per day, compared to 3,000 in December and 1,500 before winter.
The recent discovery of seven travelers from London carrying the "English variant" led the government to ban the entry of all foreign visitors until January 31.
At the request of the governor of Tokyo, a state of emergency has been declared in the capital and its periphery, affecting 38 million inhabitants.
And it should be extended to three other prefectures: Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo.

This measure is in fact not very restrictive: bars and restaurants close at 7 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. and teleworking recommended but not compulsory.
However, schools remain open and public gatherings are allowed for up to 5,000 people.
