TV rights: Mediapro wants to continue broadcasting the L1

The Sino-Spanish group proposes to the LFP to continue broadcasting the L1 matches until the end of the championship.

The Mediapro group sent a letter to the Professional Football League last Saturday in which it proposes to continue the dissemination of L1 and L2 beyond January 31 and until the end of the season, as has AFP reported.

In private, the leaders of the Sino-Spanish group have never hidden their desire to continue to broadcast the matches of the championship if the LFP does not manage to find a new broadcaster.

Contractually, Mediapro is bound by the conciliation agreement of December 22, recorded under the aegis of the Nanterre commercial court.

This provides that Téléfoot the channel is required to broadcast the meetings until January 31, 2021 "at its own production costs".

Beyond this date, nothing is planned.

If the League, which plans to launch a call for tenders, does not find a new broadcaster by early February - the OM-PSG clasico is scheduled for February 7 - it could therefore turn to Mediapro.

But it would then be necessary to find an agreement with the Catalan group which today regulates the costs of realization and production of the meetings to which is added an indemnity of 100 million euros payable in two parts.

In its letter, the Catalan group owned by Chinese funds proposes to transfer “all of its income to the League”, after deduction of operational costs.

The channel, which claims a little over 500,000 subscribers, would therefore commit to donating all of its profits to the LFP.

"The idea of Mediapro is not to make a margin, but just to cover its costs", indicates a source familiar with the matter.

But other solutions can be considered.

The LFP could, for example, take charge of all production and production costs, and recover all of the income.

On the other hand, "this proposal can also cover the hypothesis of a partial call for tenders, where part of the meetings would not find a taker", indicates the entourage of Téléfoot the chain.

To date, the League has not responded to Mediapro's proposal.
