A rich career, but without successes in the playoffs.

Philip Rivers announced his retirement tonight (Wednesday), after 17 seasons in the NFL.

The quarterback who recently celebrated his 39th birthday and spent last season in the Indianapolis Colts uniform declared that "it's just time" to end his impressive career.

Rivers was selected fourth in the 2004 draft by the New York Giants and was immediately sent to the San Diego Chargers as part of the same famous trade on Eli Manning.

In a team from California, which later moved from San Diego to Los Angeles, Rivers became a legend.

In his first two years he sat on the bench, behind Drew Brice and when it left, he became the opening quarterback and did not miss a single game until the end of his career, for 15 years.

In the playoffs, unfortunately, he did not have too much success and only once, in 2007, did he manage to march the Chargers to the division finals.

Rivers finished his career in fifth-place all-time in the regular-season yards, with 63,440, with only Bryce, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Brett Farb ahead of him.

He recorded 421 touchdowns versus 209 turnovers.

In the playoffs he provided 2,965 yards, 16 touchdowns and 10 turnovers in 12 games.

Now, according to his original plan, he will move to a high school football coach.
