Mike Carnon, a pioneer of the sports journalist in Israel, passed away today (Thursday) at the age of 85. Carnon was one of the founders of the "Sports News" newspaper, worked for many years for Haaretz and Gali Tzahal, and later served as spokesman for the Basketball Association and Maccabi Tel Aviv He retired in 2006.
Karnon is considered a tennis expert, but his great love was for Maccabi Tel Aviv. In a column he wrote for Walla! Sport in honor of Shimon Mizrahi's 70th birthday, he said: "In April 1972, Maccabi organized an international tournament to mark 40 years of activity .
I was a partner in its preparation.
A year later we produced a booklet for the game against Real Madrid in the European Champions Cup.
Since then, I have continued writing and editing the plans for the Maccabi games, and in each of the hundreds of booklets you will find the page written by Shimon Mizrahi.
He has always considered it very important and his direct connection to the fans.

"In the 1990s, I already served as Maccabi's communications officer part-time, and in 1999 I was appointed to the position full-time. I never saw myself as a spokesman. Maccabi Tel Aviv has one spokesman, and he is the Mizrahi chairman.
His dedication to the club is tireless.
Although he volunteers, he dedicates 24 hours a day to Maccabi.
Anyone who has ever met him at his law firm could not help but be impressed by the amount of phone calls he receives on Maccabi issues.
Which does not prevent him from devoting time to his professional occupation which includes appearances in courts all over the country.
In many cases, he goes straight to his office from Ben Gurion Airport on Fridays, when the team returns from Europe, to prepare the Sunday file.
"Over the years, I have had quite a few disagreements with Shimon regarding the interaction with the media.
More than once I even managed to convince him.
And even when it did not happen, I made his decision.
Because Shimon cares solely for the benefit of the club he heads.
"Even in difficult days, he believes that Maccabi Tel Aviv will return to being not only the Israeli champions, but one of Europe's top teams."
In the last post he posted on his Facebook page about two years ago, Carnon congratulated Maccabi on its Euroleague victory over Real Madrid. And this is the basketball we expect from her, "he wrote at the time. Tonight, on the day of his death, the Yellows will meet Real, for the first time without him.
