Olympia 2021: Italy passes decree to prevent IOC sanctions

The IOC threatened Italy with sanctions because it saw the independence of the national committee at risk. There was even talk of withdrawing the flag and anthem. Now the government reacted - probably at the last moment.

In the dispute over state influence on sports institutions, the Italian government has passed a decree.

As a result, changes are to be implemented in the personnel planning, which will guarantee the National Olympic Committee of Italy (Coni) more autonomy, as the government announced.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had threatened the Italians with the withdrawal of the anthem and flag at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The background is a change in the law in Italy.

With the establishment of the administrative unit Sport e Salute (sport and health), the center-right government created a competitor for the Coni in 2018.

The administrative unit was given tasks by Coni.

The aim of the Italian government was to better control the flow of money to organized sport.

From the perspective of the IOC, however, the association was no longer independent enough of state control.

For this Wednesday the IOC announced that it will speak at the executive session on the situation of the national committee.

Coni President Giovanni Malago pressed for a solution at a parliamentary session on Monday evening.

Malago warned urgently of possible sanctions at the Summer Games in Tokyo.

According to the decree, employees of the “Sport e Salute” should switch back to Coni.

The IOC informed the German Press Agency that the decree would be taken into account at the meeting.
