Argentina striker Lionel Messi, already a Ballon d'Or winner, was named the 2023 Player of the Year during the "Fifa The Best" ceremony held in London on Monday.
The 36-year-old playmaker received the same number of votes as Norway's Erling Haaland, who was the favourite after the Champions League, league and FA Cup treble, but he won after being placed at the top by the captains of the national teams who took part in the vote. France's Kylian Mbappé was third.
