On 10 January, the European Men's Handball Championship will take place in Germany. National coach Alfred Gislason has announced the official DHB squad.
Dortmund – The European Men's Handball Championship will take place in Germany for the first time from 10 January. On 4 January, national coach Alfred Gislason announced the official squad for the European Championship. After the injuries to Marian Michalczik and Patrick Groetzki, there are only 17 players in the squad – the provisional squad still consisted of 35 players.
Former world champion Klein praises German squad: "Roles are clear"
As captain of the DHB team, Johannes Golla will lead Germany through the tournament. After the official squad nomination, the mix of experience and young spirit is particularly striking. Former world champion Dominik Klein is also pleased: "The distribution of roles is clear. On the one hand, the core of experienced players, who must radiate the necessary calm and sovereignty. On the other hand, the national coach has euphoric, carefree U21 world champions up his sleeve," he told the German Press Agency.

Germany's European Championship squad impresses above all with experience and a breath of fresh air – Groetzki is out injured
It is precisely those U21 players such as goalkeeper David Späth, circle runner Justus Fischer or the backroom talents Renars Uscins and Nils Lichtlein who are expected to bring a breath of fresh air into the German team. The DHB team was able to celebrate a first success with the narrow victory in the test match against Portugal, although this was also closer than desired with 34:33. At the dress rehearsal before the start of the European Championship, in which they again faced Portugal, the German team was able to prevail with 35:31.
After the victory, however, there was also bad news for the German team. Right winger Patrick Groetzki suffered a foot injury during the game and will not be available for the European Championship. An examination revealed that his injury from the previous year has erupted again. The result: a break of several months. Coach Gislason did not want to show his cards in the event of a possible re-nomination.
